Connor McDavid’s ‘Humbling’ Message After Oilers’ 9-1 Loss to Avalanche
The Edmonton Oilers were routed 9-1 by the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night, matching the franchise’s worst margin of defeat on home ice.
Nathan MacKinnon led the way for Colorado with two goals and two assists. Cale Makar and Jack Drury also scored twice, while Parker Kelly added two goals and an assist.
The loss extended Edmonton’s skid to three games and dropped them to 6-6-4 on the season. Stuart Skinner gave up four goals on 13 shots before being pulled. Backup Calvin Pickard allowed five more on 21 shots.
“Credit to us, we kind of exposed them in a few spots,” Avalanche goalie Scott Wedgewood said. “We did a good job defensively.”
Connor McDavid, who scored the lone goal for the Oilers on a power play in the second period, called the night “humbling” and said it should serve as a warning while addressing the media after Sunday’s practice.
“It was a humbling night for everybody in this organization and for the players,” McDavid said. “So, great opportunity for us to dust ourselves off and get back at it tomorrow.”

McDavid emphasized the need for urgency and effort.
“I think there’s a belief in the room that we’ll always figure it out. That being said, I said it before — enough is enough here,” McDavid said. “We’ve got to find a way to just put a good game together. It starts with a good start and goes from there. We’ve got to find a way to just put a good game together here.”
Head coach Kris Knoblauch, meanwhile, didn’t hold back when speaking to reporters after the game on Saturday, echoing McDavid’s sentiment.
“I think we’ve been a little overconfident that things will just work out,” Knoblauch said. “This team has faced tough times before and found a way to step up. But lately, I think we’ve just been waiting for that to happen. Hopefully, tonight is rock bottom.”
The Oilers return to action Monday against the Columbus Blue Jackets at 8:30 p.m. ET.
