“America Unhooks From the World: Mass Withdrawal Shakes Global Institutions”

In a sweeping shift that is reshaping the United States’ role on the world stage, the Trump administration announced this week it will withdraw the United States from 66 international organizations — including major United Nations entities and global governance bodies — in what officials describe as a decisive break from multilateralism.

The White House released a presidential memorandum directing all federal agencies to begin ending U.S. participation and financial support for the affected groups, arguing that many of them “operate contrary to U.S. national interests, sovereignty, and prosperity.” According to the list, 31 of the organizations are affiliated with the United Nations, while the remaining 35 are independent multilateral or thematic bodies.

Among the most prominent organizations the U.S. will exit are the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) — the foundational treaty for international climate negotiations — and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world’s leading scientific body on global warming. Other departures include the U.N. Population Fund and various agencies focused on migration, labor standards, and gender equality.

In announcing the decision, senior administration officials said the step continues an “America First” agenda to reduce what Washington calls wasteful or ideologically driven global commitments and to prioritize bilateral relations over broad multilateral frameworks. Supporters within the administration argue the move protects U.S. sovereignty and saves taxpayer dollars previously directed toward foreign policy projects they view as misaligned with core national interests.
