In a nearly two-hour interview on a hockey podcast, Leon Draisaitl, the German superstar of the Edmonton Oilers, broke down in tears for the first time and opened up about the real hardships of his childhood. Tears flowed uncontrollably as he recalled the years his family struggled financially: the training sessions where he had to manage everything on his own, the youth tournaments in Europe that his family couldn’t afford for him to participate in, and the feeling of being doubted and looked down upon at such a young age.
Leon choked up as he recounted:
“There were times I thought… maybe I wasn’t good enough to continue.” But my mother always said, ‘Don’t give up, son, you were born to play this sport.’ My family has sacrificed so much, so very much… just so I wouldn’t have to give up my dream of one day wearing the Edmonton Oilers jersey.”
Near the end of the interview, Leon took a deep breath, his voice trembling. He leaned closer to the microphone and uttered just one sentence, a sentence that silenced the Oilers community and the entire hockey world, bringing tears to their eyes…
